Moderate-Pressure Glow Discharges With Foamy Electrolytic Cathodes

Photographic images of cathode areas of moderate-pressure glow discharges with foamy electrolytic cathodes are presented in this paper. A stationary discharge with the foamy cathode has been obtained for an aqueous solution of CuSO
₄
near its boiling threshold. A dynamic glow discharge with the foamy cathode has been obtained for an aqueous solution of NaHCO
₃
. The foam in this case is formed at the expense of CO
₂
bubbles released in the solution. In both cases, the discharge leans on a “3-D cathode spot” having the finite volume.
