Remote integrated power systems for new telecommunication system deployment

Optical fiber telecommunication systems and other new technologies are being deployed at an ever increasing pace in the local loop of the telecommunications network. This rapid, worldwide, deployment has raised many issues in the powering these new products and services because the requirements are often quite different from the traditional centralized power system. Because of the wide range and distribution of applications, the location and resulting environment is not very predictable and is often uncontrolled. These extremes pose a challenge in selecting the electronic equipment and batteries to provide reliable service. This paper discusses the many, and often conflicting, requirements and their relative priorities. Examples of different applications are presented and their unique requirements discussed.
