On the non-Gaussian noise in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers

The non-Gaussian character of the probability density functions (PDFs) of binary signals dominated by signal-spontaneous and spontaneous-spontaneous beat noise in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) is experimentally verified and their impact on the operation of decision circuits in optically preamplified digital receivers discussed.
