Frequency estimator using Newton's method

Loop filter-free phase locked loop (PLL) method is proposed for estimating frequency and phase of an incoming wave using the Newton's method and its performance is examined. The arrival wave is multiplied by estimated sine and cosine waves respectively and the resultant are input to integrators. The integrators' outputs are used to provide the simultaneous equations about estimated error of frequency and phase by applying the least squares criterion. These simultaneous equations are nonlinear so Newton's method is used for solving them iteratively. The application of Newton's method provides accurate frequency and phase estimates.
