The building blocks of a smart sensor for distributed control networks

This paper discusses, via a specific smart sensor design, the building of a smart sensor, from the sensing element to the communications network on which it communicates. Special emphasis is placed on the "smart" features and communications capability (commands and types of data that may be requested) that are available with the addition of the embedded-controller.
