Investigation on human visual response latency

The temporal delay in human visual system results in latency between the occurrence of a visual stimulus and its perception by the observer, which is known as visual response latency. It has been an area of interest to biomedicine, telecine, and psychology over the years. This latency can be tested by transforming time into space, which can be easily observed when we pursue a moving object. We ask observers to pursuit a target that flashed in a known location. The observers systematically mislocalised the object's flash in the direction of pursuit. The test results show visual system responds differently towards light and dark things, and the corresponding response latencies approximate 70ms and 100ms respectively. Furthermore, it demonstrates the impact of brightness upon visual latency. The results provide foundation for solving tasks concern with localization of moving object, enrich knowledge of temporal characteristic of human vision, and supply an important parameter for Ergonomics.
