Control of an active suspension using fuzzy logic

The object of this research was to design, simulate and test a fuzzy logic controller for an active vehicle suspension. First, the background information on a two degree of freedom quarter-car suspension model was examined followed by the design of the fuzzy logic controller. The simulation was completed using MATLAB and SIMULINK. For comparison purposes, a passive suspension and a linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) controlled active suspension were also simulated. The three suspensions were subjected to a random linear power spectral density input and white noise random input. For both inputs, the fuzzy logic suspension exhibited superior ride characteristics when compared to the LQG and passive suspensions; neither active suspension controller demonstrated improvements concerning road handling.
