The current status of Taiwan's wind energy generation and its future

As an Island, Taiwan receives about over six months of Northeast monsoon season every year, the average wind speed of off-shore islands and coastal regions exceeds four meters per second, which poses great potential for wind energy production. According to the Industrial Technology Research Institute and Resources Institute, regions with an average annual wind speed above four meter per second occupy about two thousand square kilometers. The mountains in central region, the western coastal regions, and the off-shore islands are all considered as regions rich in wind energy and suitable for wind energy development. The conservative estimation of total wind energy production capacity in Taiwan is above 220 million kilowatts, if these potentials are fully developed and realized, this energy production capability will help to compensate for the Taiwan's shortages in energy production.
