Design of a dual-focus offset reflector antenna for a rotating mirror microwave scanner

The Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques FHR is involved in the development of a high-resolution radar system for a tracked vehicle for use in rough terrain. This equipment will allow fire-fighting crews to maneuver even in situations with limited visibility, e.g. in smoke and dust. The present paper outlines the design of a parabolic cylinder reflector antenna for the scanning radar system and presents some results of electromagnetic simulation. The preliminary experimental results obtained for a laboratory demonstrator version of the high-resolution radar system agree well with the simulations. Currently, the design and construction of a demonstrator with a higher range is in progress and practical field trials are planned.
