Integrating AMS and advanced sensor data with distribution automation at Oncor

Integrating information within the smart grid concept is a popular topic among utilities. Strategies, visions and roadmaps to success have been shared by several utilities. Pilot projects are still being implemented and companies are upgrading the operability of their systems with various equipment and sensors. Oncor's definition includes a viewpoint that includes: transmission substations, equipment monitoring, distribution automation, smart metering, information technology networks and the communication systems that support all of these areas. Integrating Advanced Metering Systems (AMS) and sensor data with distribution automation is the topic of this paper. Reliable communication at an affordable cost was probably the largest hurdle to blocking these ideas from becoming reality sooner than anticipated.
