A neural architecture for attention modulation and cross-stream interaction

A neural architecture is introduced for how visual cortical areas V1 and V2 implement context-sensitive binding processes as attention modulation and cross-stream interaction. The present architecture based on LAMINART and FAÇADE theory shows how layered circuits in cortex areas enable feedforward, horizontal, feedback interactions and intractions to complete attention-modulated perceptual grouping. Thus, the pre-attentive/attentive interface for cortex has been established within the same circuits. Moreover, using complementary computing, present architecture shows how what-stream perceptual grouping and visible where-stream surface perception interacts to enhance perception and visual attention. Using SOC filtering, pre-attentive perception responds well to contrast-sensitive stimuli. Furthermore, the simulations show how attention can selectively propagate along an object grouping and surface filling and protect them from competitive masking, how contextual stimuli can enhance or suppress groupings in a contrast-sensitive manner as well as how boundary-surface interactions generate attention priming and translate attention across complementary visual what and where processing stream.
