A numerical study of LaBonte's iteration: an approach to acceleration

It is shown that the relaxation method used by LaBonte (1969) to calculate magnetization structures in equilibrium can be improved significantly. The convergence is accelerated by overdoing relaxation on the analogy of the S.O.R. method. The computation time is reduced by calculating the demagnetizing field on a coarse grid with a larger lattice constant than the basic grid used for relaxation. The demagnetizing field can be calculated simultaneously in advance of each relaxation sweep without degrading convergence. The results of the calculations made for thin Permalloy films show that the improved method can be used to calculate domain structures within a practical computing time.
