The magic of magnetic multilayers

In recent years there has been a renaissance in the study of magnetic multilayers—primarily because of the discoveries of enhanced or giant magnetoresistance [1, 2] and oscillatory interlayer exchange coupling [3] in magnetic multilayered structures consisting of alternating thin ferromagnetic and nonferromagnetic metallic layers. These discoveries have led to intense theoretical and experimental studies of an extraordinary range of structures over the past few years.
