Assessing the nature conservation value of grasslands by remote sensing

The feasibility of using satellite imagery within an applied programme of environmental monitoring has been assessed. Detailed botanical data has been collected from fields in the Pennine uplands of northern Britain and used to derive indices reflecting conservation value. The relationships between these data and field by field reflectance values derived from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery have been examined.
