A new integrated 3D pulsed losses and heat removal code for ICCS magnets

A 3D transient heat transfer code has been developed for ICCS magnets, which is integrated with the dynamic cable pulsed loads self-consistently. It also takes into account the layer-to-layer and pancake-to-pancake thermal diffusion, and extends the simulation to the supercritical helium coolant headers. Two modes of operation are possible: one with fixed inlet and outlet coolant pressures, the other with specified inlet mass flow rate. This enables the code to model possible flow instabilities and gain insight into the optimum coolant flow control. Simulation results on TPX PF coils are presented as an example.
