Architectures for PCS mobility management on ATM transport networks

In the future, it is expected that PCS will capture significant revenues generated by business and the residential market. In order to provide more flexible, widespread, tetherless portable communications than can be provided by today's limited portable communications approaches, low-power exchange access radio needs to be integrated with network intelligence provided by the wireline network. We describe a framework that covers the PCS mobility requirements and approaches of supporting these requirements in the ATM-based transport network. Some preliminary analyses are also summarized. In general, the anchor re-routing method for handoff is attractive from a service and transport integration perspective, while non-anchor re-routing methods are attractive if the network utilization is the primary concern.
