Optimizing logical topology of lightwave network architecture (LNA) using genetic algorithms

Two emerging trends are opening up new opportunities in distributed network architectures. The first one is the feasibility of optical fibers that can offer enormous bandwidth. The second one is the availability of real-time tunable transceivers. Suitable architectures are needed to utilize these potential technologies. The connectivity that represents the way a station's transmitters and receivers are tuned to the different bands is the logical topology of the lightwave network architecture (LNA). Further the tunability of transceivers permits the logical topology to be updated in response to changing traffic patterns. The logical topology design problem for LNA is formally proposed and solved using the technique of genetic algorithms. The results obtained are encouraging in the sense that they are near optimal. Distributed heuristics are required for realistic implementation of the logical topology problem. A distributed genetic algorithm for the implementation of the logical topology problem is presented. Finally observations with the genetic algorithm are discussed and continuing efforts in this area are outlined.
