Effect of deposition conditions on roughness and corrosion behavior of stacked CoCrPt:SiO2PMR media

The columnar grain structure of modern perpendicular recording media (PMR) introduces a nanoscaled rougher topography, making the media be susceptible to contact damage, the poorer coverage of carbon overcoat and severer wear-induced corrosion. In order to understand the details how the deposition conditions affect the PMR tribological performance, a stacked CoCrPt:SiO
₂
PMR media is proposed and the dependence of its roughness and corrosion behavior on magnetic layer deposition conditions were investigated. The results reveal that the proposed media deposited under the appropriately chosen conditions can improve the surface roughness and corrosion behavior without more compromising the magnetic recording performance.
