Laser deposited bismuth doped iron garnet films with perpendicular anisotropy

Bi, Ga substituted dysprosium iron garnet films (Bi/sub 2.0/Dy/sub 1.0/Fe/sub 3.5/Ga/sub 1.0/O/sub 12/) have been deposited on ceramic substrates by laser ablation obtaining the same stoichiometric composition as that of the target. Furthermore, after rapid thermal annealing, the as deposited amorphous film became polycrystalline with a nanometric grain structure exhibiting perpendicular anisotropy. AFM analyses of the surface quality of the films indicated a smoothness with Z-rms value of less than 7 /spl Aring/. A square hysteretic loop with a Faraday rotation of 0.78 deg//spl mu/m at zero field has been obtained. The temperature dependence of magnetization and coercivity are also presented.
