Optical ATM switching architectures

Summary form only given. Photonic switching techniques are being explored in most research laboratories worldwide. The possible use of optical switching crosspoints for the purpose of implementing the key switching functions are investigated. Within Alcatel, an original ATM switch architecture, called OASIS, has been investigated and a 4*4 switching matrix operated at 2.5 Gbit/s has been implemented. This experiment is to be seen as a first demonstration of an "almost fully" photonic ATM switch, as the switching concept relies on both wavelength routing and output queueing using optical fibre delay lines. The authors review the OASIS architecture and the results of the first demonstration, then analyse the merits of this "technology breakthrough", as well as the limitations arising from the concept itself and the actual means used to implement it.
