Eradicating the central office with coherent optical technology

The replacement of the central office by a passive fiber network, the wide spectrum of which is used as an optical ether, is considered. Applications in the local loop and, with the addition of optical amplifiers, in long-haul networks, are discussed. The technology needed for such systems is considered.<
