Investigation of friction coefficient on cutting tool material after combined treatment based of ion implantation and plasma coating

In the present work the results of investigation of the friction coefficient on cutting tool material after combined treatment based of ion implantation and plasma coating are shown when the temperature and the specific pressure changes. The cutting tool made of single-carbide and two-carbide hard alloys (WC), the rider was made of titanium alloy, high-alloyed steel and low-alloyed steel. The temperature was varied in the range of 678 to 978 K. The friction coefficient was decreased for the combination of plasma-ion coating (Mo
₂
N, Mo
₂
N+TiN) and ion implantation (Mo
⁺
, E=20 keV, D=1.6times10
²⁰
m
^-2
) by 15 to 2.2 times for the titanium alloy, 2 to 3 times for high-alloyed steels, and 1.2 to 2.1 for low-alloyed steels. For the case of an additional use of the pulsed laser radiation in the combined technology (pulse energy 3 J) the friction coefficient was decreased by 1.4 to 2.5 times for the titanium alloy, 2.5 to 3.5 times for high-alloyed steels, and 2.1 to 2.6 for low-alloyed steels. The dependencies of the friction coefficient decrease on the temperature and the specific pressure (P = 750 to 2000 N) were obtained that allow to find the cutting regimes with the minimum friction coefficient. The regimes with the minimum friction coefficient with respect to the temperature and specific pressure were found.
