Magnetic Properties of MnZn Ferrite Single Crystal Containing Er2O3

Soft magnetic ferrites now in use as magnetic devices suffer from one defect, a saturation magnetization which is considerably lower than that of metallic soft magnetic materials. The present authors found that Mn-Zn ferrite single crystals containing about 0.05 mol % Er
₂
O
₃
have an improved saturation magnetization (σ
_s
) and relative permeability (μ'
_r
). It is thought that the effect of the addition of Er
₂
O
₃
on the magnetic properties is closely related to the increase in the saturation magnetic moment resulting when Er is dissolved into Mn-Zn ferrite. Mn-Zn ferrite containing Er
₂
O
₃
is expected to prove useful as a magnetic head material.
