MLSE equalizers for incoherent optical MSK systems based on optical frequency discrimination detectionequation

We systematically review the state-based Viterbi-MLSE equalization technique for the application in fiber-optic communications in general and in optical MSK transmission systems in particular. The integration of Viterbi-MLSE equalizers with the optical frequency discrimination receiver (OFDR) enables transmission of 10 Gb/s optical MSK signals over 1470 km uncompensated standard single mode fiber (SSMF). We also report significant improvements of the equalizer performance with multi-sample-per-bit sampling schemes.
