Resarch and application of image fusion technology in meteorological satellite

Aiming at the features of satellite images and the need of meteorology researches and transactions, it is proposed here to utilize the existing image fusion technologies to fuse the meteorological satellite images. Two image fusion methods, wavelet transformation and HIS transformation, are used here. NOAA/AVHRR images and EOS/MODIS images are studied as examples. It is proven that wavelet transformation reserves the spectrum information completely, pinpoints the edge information of observed objects in meteorological satellite images, makes it easy to judge the category and altitude of clouds and is feasible to fuse the satellite images in different channels from the same sensor. HIS transformation combines the spectrum features of high resolution images and low resolution images, adds the images' spectrum features on the condition of reserving high resolution. So it is useful to identify the direction, area and detail information of object. This method is proven to be applicable to fuse the meteorological satellite images in different resolutions.
