Toward Efficient Op-Shock Simulation

This paper presents a new method to efficiently predict op-shock performance of hard disk drives (HDD). Structural components of HDD are modeled using state space formulation based on modes superposition principle. The air bearing is modeled as a non-linear spring dependent on slider's flying height and pitch angle; to obtain the air bearing stiffness the compressible Reynolds equation is evaluated in quasi-steady state and the squeeze term is approximated using viscous damping. Experimental results show that the method is reasonably accurate. The time needed for one 10-ms simulation run is only several minutes. Using this method some new design parameters, such as material proportional damping, are studied
