An analysis of carp cerebellar EEG during adaptation to weightlessness

In order to confirm the plausibility of the hypothesis of sensory conflict for space motion sickness, an experiment was carried out in 1992 during NASA's Spacelab-J mission. In the experiment, the dorsal light tilt reaction (DLTR) of carp was observed and the corresponding cerebellar EEG was recorded. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of change in gravitational environment (GE) on the EEG by means of spectrum analysis. To achieve the purpose with high reliability, the authors first established the procedure which consists of pre-processing, spectrum estimation and method of evaluation with statistical viewpoints. By using this procedure, the authors revealed that the effects due to the change of GE and the adaptation of the carp to the weightlessness environment were found in the EEG, which supports the plausibility of the sensory conflict hypothesis for space motion sickness.<>
