Automatic control of a laboratory system

A CAMAC- and PC-based control architecture has been devised to bring a laboratory experimental operation and diagnostics under computer control. The architecture employs three 80386 PCs. A Berkeley-type negative hydrogen volume ion source was brought under remote computer control (supervisory control) using this architecture, as a step in the development of an automatic beam optimization algorithm. A description is given of the hardware and software architecture and the software operation.<
