Breakdown Electric Field Investigation Using the AC Breakdown & Simulation in Insulator for Ultra-High Voltage

In this paper, we studied breakdown electric field distribution according to thickness of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) which is used to ultra-high voltage (UHV) power cable insulating material using boundary element method (BEM) simulation. We found that voltage of breakdown probability is 63.2 [%] (scale parameter) by Weibull function. Applied voltage of simulation is scale parameter. Electrode used needle-plate. The radius of curvature on needle electrode is 30 [mum]. Also thickness of insulator is changed 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 [mm] As a result of simulation we confirmed that all electric fields values are approximately 70.0 [kV/mm]
