Fast switching characteristics of magnetic persistent current switch for SMES

Cu-Ni matrix Cu-Nb multi-core composite wire for a magnetic persistent current switch was developed for SMES. Switching characteristics of small PCS coils up to 300 A were investigated simulating the practical switching operation. Fast current decrease was observed at the critical magnetic field for the transport current, however, turn-on recovery was not reversible after decreasing the field. An original procedure was devised and fast turn-on operation was achieved.<
