Machine olfaction: intelligent sensing of odours

A novel instrumentation and data processing system is described which is capable of discriminating flavours by their characteristic odour. The system comprises of an array of novel conducting polymer chemoresistive devices combined with suitable analogue instrumentation and pattern recognition software. Chemometric fingerprinting and multilayer perceptron techniques are described for the classification and identification of the sensor array data. Results are given on the application of the instrument to beer flavour monitoring.<
