Rigorous analysis of finite rectangular arrays with simultaneous integral equations

A computationally efficient method is developed for small phased arrays of rectangular waveguides for which the infinite array assumptions are not valid. Since the coupling matrix C is independent of the excitation, it is calculated and inverted only once for the specific geometry of the array. Then the response of the array for any kind of excitation is found using the same matrix. If a rectangular grid array is of interest, C is block-Toeplitz, and each Toeplitz block is also a symmetric matrix. When these symmetry properties are used, the CPU time and the storage area are reduced for the solution of the problem. An 11/spl times/11 rectangular grid array with L=dx=.5714/spl lambda/, W=dy=.254/spl lambda/ is solved for both the E-plane and H-plane scans, and the results are compared with those obtained by N. Amitay et al. (1972) for the 11 by infinite array and by A.J. Fenn et al. (1982) for the 11/spl times/11 array using moment method techniques. Overall agreement is very good.<
