Electronics manufacturing engineering curriculum

Over the past few years, American universities have been assessing the relevancy of their engineering programs. Rapid changes occurring in manufacturing's historical giants-downsizing, mergers, discontinuation of products, shifting to offshore manufacturing-have created an unsettled environment for graduating engineers. Many universities are feeling the pressure to prepare their graduates for this competitive and changing work environment. This paper describes a proposed curriculum in electronics manufacturing engineering, developed at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis, which addresses the demands of one of these changing industries. The paper first reviews what industrial leaders are saying about recent graduates and looks at the effect of rapid growth in technology on engineering programs. It then describes the manufacturing engineering program and, finally, describes the program's unique features.<
