Abstract:

An examination is made of design strategies that can move a MLDS (multilingual database system) to a multimodel database system (MMDS) to allow the cross-access of databases. The major difference between the design strategies that the authors present and the approaches taken in Multibase and Mermaid is that they do not introduce a new global data model and language. Rather, the users can continue to work with the particular model/language combination that they are most familiar with accessing across the various model/language combinations in MLDS. In this way, the authors achieve the same goals as the Multibase and Mermaid systems (i.e. providing access across a collection of database systems) without burdening the users with learning a new data model and language to allow them uniform access. They believe that their techniques can be successfully applied to integrate a heterogeneous collection of database systems without requiring the development of a global data model/language.<>
