Predicting shaft torque amplification

Shaft torque amplification (STA) is the form of subsynchronous resonance (SSR) characterized by the higher system-model complexity and computational requirements its simulation, normally in a time-domain environment, demands. A multi-modal approach drawing the turbogenerator torsional response to electrical torque impulses applied to the machine air-gap is introduced in this article as an alternative STA analysis frame. Peak torque results from the proposed algorithm are compared with similar ones obtained from EMTP runs. Loss-of-life calculations and a capacitor-reinsertion application as STA control means, are included.<
