Seismic behaviour of toughened glass station post insulators for 800 kV networks

The results of tests on 800 kV toughened glass post insulators are presented and analytical study to define their dynamic behavior when associated with connections and a supporting chassis under extreme service conditions (earthquake, short-circuit) is described. The findings show that the performance of toughened glass post insulators under high-amplitude dynamic loads permits even the most stringent specifications to be satisfied with a high safety margin. Under forced vibrations, the acceleration at the top of the insulator necessary to cause breakage was 5.6 g (g=9.81 m/s/sup 2/), which is at least three times larger than that required by specifications for Venezuela and the US West Coast.<
