Steady-state stability analysis of a power system containing power system stabilizers and SMES controllers: a comparative study

The paper presents the results of a comparative study of two damping controllers, i.e., the power system stabilizer (PSS) and the superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) controller, on damping generator oscillations. The developed scheme employs proportional-integral-derivative (PID) damping controllers to enhance the damping of both the mechanical mode and exciter mode of the studied power system. The parameters of the proposed controllers are determined by using a unified approach based on modal control theory. A frequency-domain approach based on root loci analysis and a time-domain approach based on nonlinear model simulations are accomplished in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes and to compare the different damping effects provided by two damping controllers.<
