Finite element analysis of vibrations of the Bjork Shiley Convexo-Concave heart valve

Analysis of valve sounds emitted from a mechanical heart valve prosthesis may be used for the non-invasive diagnosis of functioning and structural integrity of the valve. Finite element modeling of acoustical vibrations of mechanical heart valve components and their interaction may provide a physical and mathematical basis for developing a potential phonocardiographic diagnostic system. The Bjork Shiley Convexo-Concave heart valve was modeled to determine the resonant frequencies of individual valve components and to predict the effect of variations in the material and geometry on the emitted sound. Changes in the vibrations of one valve component due to simulated fatigue fracture were also assessed. Results of the analysis indicate normal variations in the material properties and valve geometry result in only small changes in the resonant frequencies. Conversely, simulated fatigue fracture significantly altered the vibrational modes of one valve component, supporting the possibility of phonographic diagnosis of the structural integrity of BSCC valves.<
