Radiation hardness of plastic scintillating fiber against fast neutron and gamma -ray irradiation

The authors report preliminary results of measurements of the radiation hardness of the plastic scintillating fiber Kuraray SCSF-81 against irradiation with fast neutrons and /sup 60/Co gamma -rays at neutron fluences from 1*10/sup 11/ to 5*10/sup 13/ n/cm/sup 2/ and integrated gamma -ray doses from 80 to 10/sup 5/ Gy. Deterioration of light transmittance and light emittance was observed at a neutron fluence of about 10/sup 12/ n/cm/sup 2/ and an integrated dose of about 10/sup 3/ Gy for neutron and gamma -ray irradiation. It is found that the deterioration stops as the neutron fluence or the gamma -ray dose increases, and the long component of the attenuation length deteriorates a little more slowly than the short one.<
