An efficient procedure for the implementation of corona models in electromagnetic transients programs

It has been shown in previous studies that transmission line corona models which are suitably described by piecewise linear approximations are easy to implement using the compensation method in the EMTP. This approach requires the line to be divided into short sections. In the present work an efficient recursive scheme that allows for an independent solution of each segment and its associated corona branch is described. The entire line is treated as a single nonlinear element by the EMTP. Simulations of field tests on an actual line under corona are presented and comparisons are made with the previous implementation. Considerable savings in CPU time have been attained with the new scheme, which can be coded and interfaced with any electromagnetic transients program.<
