Li/LiCoO/sub 2/ in inorganic electrolyte solution

The results of half cell experiments with Li/LiCoO/sub 2/ in inorganic electrolyte solution indicate the stability, compatibility, and high rate capability of this system. The electrolyte solution has an acceptable conductivity of about 65 mS/cm at 25 degrees C and can be used in the range from -25 up to 70 degrees C. Potentiodynamic cycling of the LiCoO/sub 2/ electrode between 3.5 and 4.5 V versus Li show power loss with capacity decrease of 0.3% per cycle. Charging up to 5 V results in no degradation of the CoO/sub 2/ electrode. In an overcharge reaction Cl/sub 2/ was evolved reacting with components to compatible products. The formation of Cl/sub 2/ at the Ni electrode was shown by applying online electrochemical mass spectrometry. Lithium cycle efficiencies of about 99% at 40 mA/cm/sup 2/ were achieved.<
