Rechargeable Li/V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ D cell development

The authors report on practical ambient temperature rechargeable lithium cells and batteries using V/sub 2/O/sub 5/. V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ has interesting characteristics as a positive for lithium rechargeable cells. The material can be used to a 2.8 V discharge cutoff (upper plateau) or to 2 V. The development of practical D size cells for both uses is discussed, and capacity retention date and cycle life are presented. A modified form of V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ is discussed with respect to cell design, cell performance, and the particular load application. The optimization of Li/V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ cells using the upper plateaux is also considered.<
