Numerical simulations of dynamic spacing and asperity contact of a shaped rail slider

Numerical simulations of dynamic spacing induced by a measured track topography and asperity contact is presented for the IBM MR-head three rail slider. The factored implicit scheme is modified for use with the shaped rail slider. The results show that the dynamic spacing consists of low frequency components and high frequency components that are due to, respectively, the waviness and the roughness of the track topography. When disk runout is considered and asperity contact is at the outer rail, the response depends on the location of the asperity with respect to the runout. However, when the asperity contact is at the center rail the response is similar at all locations on the runout.<
