Analysis of CCSN/SS7 link traffic engineering algorithms

The CCSN (common channel signalling network)/SS7 (signaling system 7) traffic engineering algorithms that were designed for use by planning and engineering systems, such as the INPLANS system, are analyzed. These algorithms are based on industry-accepted theoretical assumptions about SS7 traffic, which have been tested with real data. In general, the assumptions have been substantiated, confirming the algorithms used in industry, to the extent that they were tested. However, most of the signaling units observed were call-setup messages, which used a maximum of only 12% link capacity. Thus, testing a network that has higher traffic loads is advised.<>
