Intelligent deburring of precision components

The author describes a strategy for using vision feedback for burr size and location determination, and then sensor feedback by combined force and acoustic emission sensing to position the deburring tool. In addition, the role of burr forming models in adjusting the machining parameters for product manufacture to minimize the burr size during machining is discussed. A proposal is made for a multifaceted approach to the prediction, process planning, and finishing operation for burr removal for precision component manufacture. Results of recent research at the University of California at Berkeley are presented to show the feasibility of this approach.<>
