Integrated circuit solutions-design considerations for DECT

Integrated circuit solutions to the digital European cordless telecommunications (DECT) system are considered. In particular, the effects of cochannel interference (CCI) and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) on limiter-discriminator detected Gaussian-filtered minimum shift keying (GMSK) with two different decision techniques are investigated to determine the better decision technique. Two-level and three-level eye patterns are created by varying the receive lowpass filter bandwidth, and the eyes are then decoded with one and two-threshold level circuits. It is shown experimentally that the three-level eye performs better than the two-level eye in the stationary, AWGN channel by about 1 dB, but that the combined AWGN/CCI environment severely degrades the three-level eye's performance at low C/I values. In addition, experiments reveal that in the combined AWGN/CCI environment, the two-level eye has superior performance when compared to the three-level eye.<
