Design of a superconducting magnet system for Maglev applications

The superconducting magnet system for magnetic levitation (Maglev) transportation system has been analyzed as part of a DOT system concept definition study. The magnet design requirements are developed based on a locally commutated linear synchronous motor propulsion system and sidewall null-flux levitation. The characteristics of this electromagnetic system were used to develop the superconducting magnet system requirements which would lead to an optimal overall system. A preliminary design based on these requirements is summarized and recommendations for future work are discussed. Significant results of the study are that the required magnet system technology is available today and can be utilized to develop a Maglev transportation system between major population centers operating at speeds in excess of 135 m/s.<
