Living with the microprocessor on traction-the British Rail experience

The past three years has seen the main influx of microprocessor based equipment the vital traction control field. British Rail now have the classes 90, 91 and 319 locomotives/multiple units with processor driven thyristor DC drives and the second-generation push-pull equipment in service, and the three-phase drive under development with the class 60 about to enter service. The author examines the past, present and future prospects of microprocessor-based traction control from the viewpoint of British Rail experiences.<
