Integration of heterogeneous electronic information resources in engineering

It is pointed out that the diversity and rapid growth of the volume of scientific literature have made it more difficult for individuals in the sci-tech community to stay current. The authors present an innovative approach to accessing that literature: the library information workstation. The information workstation integrates diverse information sources, remote and local, commercial and home-grown. From a single terminal, patrons can access Illinois' statewide online catalog; article databases such as Current Contents, Medline, and Applied Science and Technology Index; and files of local interest such as the titles and call numbers of journals received in the university's several sci-tech libraries. The workstation in the Library of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology is presented as an example.<
