The microwave landing system: a precision approach for the future

In response to a report to the US Congress by the General Accounting Office in May 1988, the Federal Aviation Administration implemented a series of studies and demonstrations designed to determine the economic and operational benefits of the microwave landing system (MLS). Final results from this program have been reported to Congress in accordance in language contained in US Senate Report 101-398 on the Department of Transportation and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for fiscal year 1991. The author identifies and describes key findings of the MLS demonstration program. The results support a decision to commence with the deployment of the MLS in accordance with international implementation schedules.<>
